Video Production Rates Revisited
We’re getting an increasing number of quasi-frantic phone calls lately from people looking for “quick ballpark quotes” for videos. I most cases, their boss has given them the task with no real details.
While I’d love to be able to just post a price list that tells you a 2 minute video costs $x.00, or a web “commercial” costs $x.00, I can’t. About a year ago, I wrote a post that explains this in a little more detail, but the long and short of it is: there are a lot of variables, that can really change the scope of the project, which makes nailing down a “ballpark” estimate almost impossible. Without details like what the goal of the video is, what’s the story you’re trying to tell, will you need actors/voiceover/music/animation/etc. it’s like trying to nail Jello to the wall. I could give you a ballpark, but it could be wildly off-base… as would any of the other estimates from any other production companies you contact.
Think of it this way: how much does a house cost? It’s kind of hard to say because it depends on where the house is, how many bedrooms/baths/etc. You could figure out an average for all houses, but it’s hardly the best way to go about finding out.
Now, you may get a quick ballpark estimate from other production companies, and if they’re comfortable with giving you a price with no knowledge of your needs and goals, then good for them; that won’t happen here. It’s actually a fairly quick process to give us a call, and spend 10 minutes discussing the project. We’ll ask you a few questions, and based on that discussion we’ll give you an estimate. Pretty cool, huh?
If you’re looking for a quick turn around, let us know and we’ll turn it around as quickly as we can. Depending on the complexity of the project, it’s not uncommon to get you an estimate within 24 hours.
